I love the element of surprise in working with mixed media. I enjoy experimenting with new combinations of materials and giving the materials themselves freedom to take shape as they will. In the case of the Alchemy Series I used watercolor, gold leaf, and pastel. The images were inspired by the broad archetypal themes running through the work of the medieval alchemists who sought to redeem the spirit trapped in matter. If you would like to read more about this topic, please see Alchemy Series, Creative Process and Alchemical Themes.
The Alchemy Series originals shown below are available for purchase in sets of two. The photographs cannot capture the shimmer of the gold leaf on each of the images. Each piece is framed with a custom bronze-colored frame, an 8-ply archival mat and UV filtering glass. All frames are the identical size, measuring 21 h x 19.5 w (there are slight variations in size of the images themselves which are not visible below).
The mixed media landscapes are one of a kind pieces, all created with acrylics combined with other materials. Some are composed on hot pressed watercolor paper metal leaf, and 18K gold leaf. Others are composed on gesso board and incorporate additional collage elements, often Japanese papers and 18K golf leaf.
